Draxten Memorial Fund for Heritage and Cultural Camps

The Draxten Fund was a gift by will in 1998 from Nina Draxten, the daughter of the original founder and first president of Sons of Norway, Bersvend Draxten. She wanted children to have a chance to learn about their Norwegian heritage and culture. Nina was a lifelong teacher and retired from the University of Minnesota as an Associate Professor of English. She began an acting career at age 80. She directed many school plays in her long career as an educator. She lived to be 98 years old. Her name was pronounced, like Dinah, as she was born at 9 PM on the 9th day of the 9th month.

Each year the Sons of Norway Foundation awards approximately $10,000, divided by the number of members in each of the six US Districts within Sons of Norway, specifically for Sons of Norway youth to attend heritage & culture camps. Around two hundred children are awarded scholarships to attend these camps every year. To be eligible to receive Draxten Fund assistance in District 2, the camper must be accepted by one of the three camps and be receiving a scholarship from their local lodge. The funds provided to District 2 will be distributed to those campers who qualify.

SOFIE/OLSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Sofie/Olson Memorial Scholarship Fund was created in 1995 from donations contributed after the untimely deaths of two women who gave much of their time and talent to District 2. Sherrie Sofie was district president from 1988-1989 and Bernice Olson served as district treasurer from 1980-1994.

The fund provides scholarships to the children and grandchildren of district members to attend our youth camps: Camp Nidaros, Camp Normanna and Camp Trollhaugen.

The scholarship fund is self-sustaining and only the interest earned will be used for the awards.

CARL M SALTVEIT SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Carl M. Saltveit Scholarship Fund is a permanent, endowed scholarship fund designed to encourage and facilitate attendance to the University of Oslo International Summer School in Norway. The amount of the award varies each year and covers tuition, room and board. Only District 2 members, children or grandchildren are eligible to apply this scholarship. The scholarship is named for Carl M. Saltveit, Sr., in honor and remembrance of his contributions to the Norwegian-American community through Grieg Lodge #15 (Portland, Oregon), his work in Norwegian war relief, and educational exchange and services to immigrants and visitors from Norway. In addition, he served as an International Director of the Sons of Norway.

GUIDELINES FOR SOFIE/OLSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION

The Sofie/Olson Memorial Scholarship Fund was created from donations that were contributed after the untimely deaths of two women – Sherrie Sofie and Bernice Olson – who gave much of their time and talents to District Two Sons of Norway.

Who is Eligible?

All applicants must be members or related to a current member of District Two Sons of Norway.

For Camp Normanna & Camp Nidaros, applicants must be between the ages of 9-12.

For Camp Trollhaugen applicants must be between the ages of 13-15.

All applicants must have completed a separate application for the camp of their choice. Awards are contingent on acceptance to the camp applied for.

How do I apply?

Applicants must submit a scholarship application (see below).

How are the winners selected?

Final selection of the scholarship winners will be made by the Scholarship Committee. The criteria for selection include interest and participation in Norwegian cultural and heritage activities.

How much is the Award?

The District Two Scholarship Committee will determine the amount to be awarded based on the available interest in the scholarship account. A recipient can only be awarded the Scholarship once within a three-year period.

Carl M. Saltveit Scholarship

For study at the
International Summer School 2024 University of Oslo – Oslo, Norway

The Carl M Saltveit Scholarship Fund will provide tuition, room, and board to one qualified applicant to attend

the International Summer School at the University of Oslo. This permanently endowed fund provides one

scholarship annually to encourage and facilitate attendance at the International Summer School and pays for

Basic Tuition and the cost of room and board in the university dormitory. Extra classes, optional trips and

airfare are the responsibility of the recipient. The Scholarship is named for Carl M. Saltveit Sr. in honor and

remembrance of his contributions to the Norwegian community through Grieg Lodge #15 in Portland, Oregon,

his work in Norwegian war relief, educational exchange and services to immigrants and visitors from Norway.

He also served as an International Director of the Sons of Norway.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

Applicants must:

 Have met the entrance requirements and applied to attend the International Summer School at the University of Oslo

(award of scholarship contingent on acceptance to ISS); and

 Be a current member of District Two, or a child or grandchild of one; and

 Have completed one year of college.

HOW DO I APPLY?

Applicants must submit:

 A completed and signed application  Two essays

 Three letters of recommendation.  An official grade transcript.

HOW IS THE RECIPIENT SELECTED?

The District Two Scholarship Committee will choose and forward all applications and recommendations, to the Sons of

Norway Foundation. The Foundation will administer the scholarship.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Does the scholarship provide any assistance with travel to and from Norway?

A. No, the Carl Saltveit Scholarship only provides for basic tuition, room, and board. In the past,

some lodges have helped with paying for the airfare.

Q. Is it true that applicants of any age may apply?

A. Absolutely! Anyone who has completed at least one year of college-level work, meets the entrance

requirements, and has been accepted to the International Summer School may apply. Two of the winners of the

Carl Saltveit Scholarship in 2017 were in their late ‘40s, for example.

Q. May the scholarship help provide for living off campus?

A. No. If the student awarded the scholarship chooses to live off campus, the scholarship will still pay for

Basic Tuition but not room and board.

Q. When will the dates for the ISS be announced and applications accepted?

A. Generally, the dates are announced in early November and applications are accepted in January. For

best information, however, please refer to the ISS website at www.uio/english/studies/summerschool.

Q. At the ISS website, it has different application portals for scholarship and non-scholarship applicants.

Because I am applying for a scholarship, am I supposed to use the scholarship portal?

A. No, the portal for scholarship applicants is for Norwegian students, not non-Norwegians.
